Name: Michael Riza
Gender: Male
Race: Symbiotic human/fungus bond
Age: 23
Magic/Weapons: The fungus attached to Michael can extend whip-like hyphae that can be used to grasp, cut, or crush. The hyphae can also be extended through the ground, allowing Michael to brace himself or set up punji-like ambushes. The fungus can also emit bursts of toxic spores, causing mild hallucinations when inhaled.
Physical Description: Most of Michael’s features are hidden beneath an outer layering of white, fur-like fungal growth. The only parts of him not completely covered are his face and a few strands of black hair.
Personality: Prior to being infected by the fungus, Michael was a driven, ambitious man, seeking fortune, higher station, and adventure. Much of Michael’s humanity has been supplanted by the fungus’s need to propagate, rendering Michael a passenger in his own body. However, he does experience brief periods of impaired control. When in control, Michael’s primary focus is finding a cure for the fungus. Due the fungus’s chemical and physical manipulation, Michael comes across as delirious and uncoordinated.
History: As the third child of a patrician family, Michael’s prospects in the Republic of Vesperia were limited. His eldest brother, Adriano, had been trained in the family business and was set to become a master of trade. His sister, Katherine, had enlisted in the Vesperian Army and had swiftly become an officer. For Michael, the only path left to any sort of social standing would be to enter the priesthood. Though one could certainly gain wealth, power, and prestige under the auspices of the clergy, Michael was unenthusiastic. To him, a position in the clergy was little more than a consolation prize awarded for the accident of his birth. He wanted nothing more than to make his own way in the world.
One day, when Michael was on the docks helping unload a shipment of spices, he saw a strange vessel sailing into port. Going to investigate, he found that it was an exploratory vessel from the far-off Beylik of Jhofar. The explorers had been given a mission that no one yet had successfully undertaken: circumnavigate the world of Cartes. It was then that Michael knew how he would carve his legacy. With his family’s blessing and the Jhofari captain’s permission, Michael joined the world-traveling expedition, sailing for lands unknown.
In the first week, the expedition had discovered a handful of small islands. Though they held nothing of value, they were as-yet uncharted and thus claimed in the name of the Bey. In the second week, the expedition found nothing except open ocean. By week four, morale began to drop. By week six, supplies had nearly run out. Mutiny was brewing. But before the revolt could come to a head, the ship’s lookout spotted land. The crew swiftly made landfall, eager to find food and water. They did not have to search long: the island held an abundance of fruit and fresh water. Having fed and resupplied, the crew set up camp.
Michael woke with a start. Screams pierced the night. Grabbing a dagger, he rushed out from his tent and found himself in a warzone. A horde of strange figures in white robes had descended upon the camp, catching the crew by surprise. Several lay dead in the dirt, though most had rallied a counterattack. Michael hesitated a moment before throwing himself into the fight. Rushing to the aid of the nearest crewman, Michael blindsided an attacker, plunging the dagger through his ribs.
The attacker barely seemed to notice. Rather than collapse in pain, he simply wheeled on Michael, throwing him to the ground. Dazed, Michael looked up at the attacker. He saw that what he had thought were robes were actually… fur? The creature extended its arm towards Michael. The fur began to ripple and coalesce. A tendril shot out, piercing Michael through the chest. He cried out in pain, and then in horror as the fur began to spread across his chest. His consciousness faded, but right before the world turned black, he had the strange thought that a doorway was opening over him.
