The Vasshhan child wadded through waist-high water--that is, waist-high for him. There had to be a certain point where the bottom took a steep dive, but Saghira hadn't found it yet, and as it was he could still see the bottom through the murky, shallow marsh.
It wasn't the largest lake in the cluster, far from it; (more of a large pond, really); he'd chosen this one because it was far enough away from the tall trees and monstrous bodies of water that he felt relatively safe. And in the shallow waters at his feet, hundreds of little bait-fish swam this way and that. He'd spent the morning and all of yesterday trying to catch one, chasing after them hopelessly, spending hours on dug out traps he failed to corral them into, carving spears out of switches he found at the edge of the forest. Now? He was back to using his hands.
It wasn't that he couldn't find enough to eat, more that he was so tired of playing guessing games with what berry was poisonous, and what wasn't.
It had been eight sun-downs since Saghira had woken up at the desert edge of this strange oasis, and he'd yet to meet anyone else save for the bot flies and snakes and so on. Frankly, he didn't mind it all very much--nobody was there to sneer at him, or accuse him for doing things he hadn't. He didn't have to look out for armed officials if there weren't any. And some of the reptiles and amphibians were docile enough to play with, if you could catch them.
Something verdant-yellow and larger than the minnows moved in the water and he dropped to his knees and lunged, head momentarily submerging. After a bit of a struggle, he came up empty-handed and disappointed.
